What We Do

Our Six Strategic Pillars

The institutional architecture of ACDRM, six interconnected disciplines that form our comprehensive approach to disaster risk management across Africa.

Strengthening systems. Building resilience.
01

Disaster Risk Governance

Supporting governments and institutions to design, strengthen, and coordinate policy frameworks and inter-agency systems for effective disaster risk management.

02

Capacity Building & Training

Developing Africa's next generation of disaster management professionals through certified programmes, executive training, and fellowships.

03

Research & Knowledge

Generating rigorous, evidence-based research on disaster risk and climate resilience, translated into policy recommendations and publications that drive institutional change.

04

Preparedness & Response Systems

Strengthening early warning systems, contingency planning frameworks, and operational readiness protocols, so governments are equipped before disaster strikes.

05

Climate Resilience

Integrating climate risk reduction into development planning, infrastructure design, and community resilience programmes across the continent.

06

Disaster Risk Financing

Designing and mobilising innovative financing mechanisms, from sovereign risk pools to donor programme structures, ensuring resilience is sustainably funded at scale.

Our Purpose

The institution African governments and development partners call when disaster risk governance cannot wait.

Africa's first dedicated centre of excellence for disaster risk governance and humanitarian leadership, built for those who cannot afford to fail.

Our Approach

How We Think

At ACDRM, we approach disaster risk management as a governance challenge, not merely an emergency to be managed. This distinction shapes everything we do. Where others see crises, we see institutional gaps: weaknesses in policy architecture, coordination failures between agencies, shortfalls in professional capacity, and the absence of financing systems that match the scale of the problem.

Our work begins with deep diagnostic rigour, understanding the specific governance context, identifying where systems break down under pressure, and designing interventions that build lasting institutional capacity. We do not arrive with solutions and impose them. We arrive with frameworks, and we build with the people who will sustain the work when we leave.

This is what separates ACDRM from relief organisations, donor-funded programmes, and imported technical assistance. We are an African institution, thinking through African realities, building systems that belong to Africa.

Our Principles

What We Stand For

Evidence over assumptions
Every recommendation is grounded in data, research, and field reality.
African systems over imported frameworks
Solutions designed for Africa's realities, not transplanted from elsewhere.
Governance over relief
We build the systems that prevent catastrophe, not only respond to it.
Capacity over dependency
Every engagement leaves institutions stronger and more self-sufficient.
Long-term resilience over short-term response
We invest in what lasts, not what looks effective in the next news cycle.
